Lakhimpur Kheri history connects the region with Lunar race and Mahabharata traditions, ancient mounds, Samudra Gupta horse inscription memory, Rajput frontier settlements, Awadh and the 1857 uprising at Mohammadi. Modern Kheri is the largest district of Uttar Pradesh, known for Dudhwa National Park, Kishanpur sanctuary, Tharu communities, sugarcane-jaggery economy and rich Terai river landscape.
District history links Kheri with Lunar race traditions, Mahabharata episodes, ancient mounds and a stone horse inscription of Samudra Gupta now kept in Lucknow Museum.
The district area remained a difficult Terai frontier. Under Akbar it formed part of Khairabad Sarkar in Oudh, with later Rajput, Nawabi and forest settlement histories.
In the Indian Rebellion of 1857, Mohammadi became one of the main centres of independence struggle in northern Oudh, according to district history.
Dudhwa National Park was declared in 1977 and later Dudhwa with Kishanpur formed Dudhwa Tiger Reserve in 1987, making Kheri Uttar Pradesh main wildlife tourism district.
