Kushinagar is identified with ancient Kushinara, capital of the Mallas and one of the sixteen mahajanapadas. It is globally revered because Gautama Buddha attained Mahaparinirvana here; excavations revealed stupas, monasteries and the reclining Buddha image, and modern temples from several Buddhist traditions keep it a living pilgrimage city.
Ancient Kushinara was the capital of the Mallas, one of the sixteen mahajanapadas, and remained linked with Maurya, Shunga, Kushana, Gupta, Harsha and Pala phases.
Kushinagar is revered as the place where Gautama Buddha delivered his last sermon, attained Mahaparinirvana and was cremated at Ramabhar or Mukutbandhan.
Modern Kushinagar rose to prominence through archaeological work by Alexander Cunningham and C L Carlleyle, who exposed the main stupa and reclining Buddha image in 1876.
After independence the area remained part of Deoria district until Kushinagar became a separate Uttar Pradesh district on 13 May 1994.
