GET TO KNOW THE PLACE

Gaharwar, Sharqi capital, Akbar bridge and woollen carpet craft

Jaunpur grew through Gaharwar, Tughlaq, Sharqi, Lodi, Mughal, Awadh and British phases. Malik-ul-Sharq made Jaunpur his capital in the late fourteenth century, and the Sharqi period created major monuments such as Atala Masjid, Jama Masjid, Lal Darwaza Masjid and Shahi Qila. Akbar-era Shahi Pul on the Gomti remains one of the district signature landmarks. Jaunpur later became a separate district in the nineteenth century.

Ancient-Early Medieval

Bhar, Gaharwar and Jafrabad roots

Jaunpur history records Bhar, Soiriya, Gaharwar and Jafrabad-Yaunapur traditions before the Sharqi period. The area was connected with Kannauj, Banaras and old fort settlements around Jafrabad.

1393-1484

Sharqi capital and architecture

Malik-ul-Sharq made Jaunpur a capital and the Sharqi rulers developed a major centre of education, culture, music, art and architecture. Atala Masjid, Jama Masjid, Lal Darwaza Masjid and other monuments belong to this era.

1564-1818

Mughal bridge and district formation

During Akbar rule, Shahi Pul was built on the Gomti in 1564. Jaunpur later passed through Awadh and British administration. Deputy collectorship began in 1818 and Jaunpur developed as a separate district.

Present

Dari craft, industry and pilgrimage

Modern Jaunpur combines Sharqi monuments, Sheetla Chaukiya Dham, Gomti-side city heritage, woollen carpet or dari craft, agriculture and Satahariya industrial activity.
