Dharamshala is a major hill destination in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. It grew from the historic Kangra valley and later became important as a British hill station and cantonment. After 1959, McLeod Ganj became the home of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and the Tibetan exile community. Today Dharamshala is known for Dhauladhar views, monasteries, Himalayan treks, Kangra art, cricket, tea gardens and Himachali-Tibetan food culture.
Dharamshala belongs to the wider Kangra valley, historically linked with Trigarta, Katoch rule, Kangra fort traditions, temples, painting, music and Himalayan trade routes.
Dharamshala developed as a British hill station and military cantonment in the nineteenth century, with McLeod Ganj, Forsyth Ganj and St John in the Wilderness carrying that colonial-era memory.
The 1905 Kangra earthquake caused major destruction across the region. It remains important for understanding Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj and old Kangra settlement history.
After 1959, McLeod Ganj became the residence of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and an important Tibetan cultural, religious and learning centre.
Modern Dharamshala combines monasteries, treks, HPCA Cricket Stadium, Kangra art, tea gardens, Dharamshala Skyway and Tapovan Vidhan Sabha, making it a year-round destination.
