GET TO KNOW THE PLACE

From Son Valley heritage to modern energy capital

Sonbhadra is the second largest district of Uttar Pradesh and is known for touching four state borders. Son-Belan valley traditions, early cave landscapes, Vijaygarh and Agori forts, Robertsganj, mineral resources, Rihand Dam and power projects make it a strong nature, archaeology, pilgrimage and industrial tourism district.

Ancient landscape

Son-Belan valley and early communities

Sonbhadra history records caves in the Son valley and early communities such as Bhar, Chero, Kol and Kharwar. The landscape carries archaeological, tribal and river-valley memory.

Forts and regional rule

Vijaygarh, Agori and Benares State

The district history connects Vijaygarh Fort with Kol rulers and Agori Fort with later regional powers. In the eighteenth century the area came under Narayan rulers of Benares State before British administration.

Modern district

Robertsganj and four-state border identity

Sonbhadra was carved from Mirzapur on 4 March 1989. It is known as a large southeastern district of Uttar Pradesh with Robertsganj as headquarters and borders touching Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar.

Energy and minerals

Power plants, coal and Rihand belt

The district is called the Energy Capital of India because of its power plants and mineral base. Rihand Dam, Renukoot, Anpara, Obra and Shaktinagar form the modern industrial and power landscape.
