Siddharthnagar lies near the north eastern border of Uttar Pradesh and is strongly associated with Gautam Buddha. The district takes its name from Prince Siddhartha, and Piprahwa-Ganwaria is linked with ancient Kapilvastu, the Shakya capital where Siddhartha Gautama spent his early life. The district was created on 29 December 1988 from the northern part of Basti.
The district history is associated with Gautam Buddha and the Shakya republic. Piprahwa-Ganwaria is linked with ancient Kapilvastu, and excavations found stupa, monastery and settlement remains connected with the early Buddhist world.
Piprahwa Stupa was excavated in 1897-98, and further work in 1973-74 strengthened the archaeological importance of the site. This makes Siddharthnagar a serious Buddhist circuit destination, not only a local district page.
The district was carved out of the northern part of Basti on 29 December 1988. Naugarh became the district headquarters, with major routes toward Gorakhpur, Basti, Lucknow, Gonda and the Nepal border.
Modern Siddharthnagar combines Buddhist heritage, border movement, rice mills and Kalanamak rice processing. This mix supports pilgrimage, archaeology, farm tourism and local product commerce.
