GET TO KNOW THE PLACE

Kashi Mahajanapada, Baluwa, Baba Kinaram and modern Chandauli

Chandauli was created from Varanasi district in 1997 and belongs to the old Kashi cultural region. The district history mentions ancient brick mounds, Baluwa on the Ganga where Pashchim Vahini Mela is held, Ramgarh as the birthplace of Baba Kinaram, and Hetampur Fort connected with the fourteenth-fifteenth century fort tradition. The district is also known for Mughalsarai or Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyaya rail junction and the Chandra Prabha forest-waterfall belt.

Ancient

Kashi Mahajanapada and Ganga mounds

The present Chandauli area belonged to the ancient Kashi region. District history records brick-strewn mounds, old tanks and kunds, Baluwa on the Ganga and sacred-river traditions tied to the wider Varanasi landscape.

14th-15th century

Hetampur Fort and regional rule

Hetampur Fort is recorded as an old fort site spread over a large area, connected by tradition with Todar Mal Khatri and later Hetam Khan. The ruined kots make it a meaningful local heritage stop.

1997

District formation from Varanasi

Chandauli was constituted as a separate district in 1997 from Varanasi district. Its modern identity combines Kashi-region heritage, railway logistics at Mughalsarai, agriculture and the Chandra Prabha forest-waterfall belt.

Present

Waterfalls, rice and zari craft

Today Chandauli is known for Rajdari-Devdari waterfalls, Chandra Prabha sanctuary, Latif Shah Dam, Baba Kinaram Ramgarh, black rice and Adamchini rice promotion, and zari-zardozi artisan clusters serving Varanasi units.
